Under the current Government, a complete Vehicle import ban was placed for the import of vehicles including Motorcycles and Scooters in the year 2020. This is to adjust the trade balance of the country. Sadly the ban is still going ahead in this year 2024 too. So this had affected the young Sri Lankan’s specially A/L and university students who wanted to buy a brand new motorcycle or scooter, that are used to be imported from Japan or India. Now these people have to wait indefinitely to fulfill their dreams. As of today Sri Lanka Rupees is exchanged at the rate of around Rs 320 against one US$. So the prices of the Motorcycles and Scooters will be in higher price range, if the rate remain so in the future.

Now Sri Lanka people are looking for the lifting of import ban after the IMF Bail out in the year 2023. In the meantime, the Government sources ssaid it will be lifted by later part of  2024.

Sri Lanka Vehicle Import Ban Continues in 2024 too.

In this year 2024 too the vehicle import ban is being continued in Sri Lanka as its Foreign Currency reserves went too low. The government had gone for the assistance of the IMF to help Sri Lanka. So this year too there is no hope that the youths to purchase a brand new motorcycle or scooter from the local dealer. Even if they bought a new one, the petrol price had gone to very high is Sri Lanka. Earlier it was priced at Rs 254/- for a liter.

Here is another blow for the Sri Lanka youths as the New Sri Lanka Petroleum minister had increased the petrol price to Rs 370/- per liter. And no Octane 95 petrol will be issued to the motorcycles in Sri Lanka at any petrol shed. Still youths are staying in queues to get their share of petrol sheds at high price. And the petrol sheds are monitored by Sri Lanka Armed Forces with Rifles.

Buying Motorbike.

Now Honda and Yamaha are selling Re-Conditioned motorbikes and Scooters with warranty at affordable price through their dealers. These Two Wheeler models are looking like Brand new ones with perfect body work and finish.  Sri Lanka youths like to have their motorcycle to enhance their life style. They are ready to spend from Rs 250,000/- to Rs 900,000/- to own their dream motorbike. First their choice is Macho look bike. Then its color and the sound their  motorcycle should produce and these used to come in to their mind. Most of them like to own 250 CC or higher powered Japanese Motorcycles. Sri Lanka officially allows import of under 250cc motorbikes. Because of the the big motorcycle’s heavy fuel consumption many of them back off from their big motorcycle idea due to the local cost of living.

In this case they look for the Japanese designed motorcycles that were assembled in India and used to be imported by corporate companies. Some of them pay cash on purchase and get rid of paying the monthly installment. Otherwise they have to face monthly payments that comes through the leasing or financing from finance companies. Also they have to pay large sum of money for registration, third party Insurance and full covering Insurance.

Some used to modify their exhaust system with modern one to get smart sound and peoples attention on their motorbike. But it is illegal to run a motorcycle with heavy noise. Sri Lanka Youths used to stick specially designed stickers on the body of their motorbikes. Some of them avoid it as the machines may lose their second hand value due to those stickers. There are youngsters used to fit funny horns and lighting in their motorbikes.

Sri Lanka Youths are doing dangerous things to show their new life style to their friends. Many youngsters used to make video clips with the help of their friends. Most of them want to make it while they achieve high speed on their motorcycle. This is everyone’s dream after buying their motorcycle in Sri Lanka. Many youth had lost their lives after trying this high speed stunt. Many riders had hit other vehicles or went out of the road and lost their lives.

Popular motorcycles in Colombo, Sri Lanka are Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Bajaj, TVS, Hero and Suzuki. You can view lot of Honda Hornet,  Yamaha FZ motorcycles Suzuki Gixxer, Bajaj Pulsar, TVS Apache RTR and Royal Enfield on the roads which  are priced around Rs 400,000/- to Rs 950,000/-. These motorbikes are becoming more popular with the younger generation. The Bajaj motorcycles still leads the overall motorcycle sales here along with competing Honda, Yamaha FZ and TVS models. In Colombo most of the youths have scooters like Yamaha Ray ZR, Honda Dio, TVS Ntorq and other top scooter models as they are good for the city traffic.
