Largest Blue Star Sapphire

Largest Blue Star Sapphire in the world was recently Mined in Sri Lanka.

Gemologists in Sri Lanka claim that the largest blue star sapphire yet has been discovered in a mine in the country. Actually in the international gem market Blue Sapphire gets very important place. This is due to its sparkling appearance. Perfectly cut blue sapphire will give out superior rays from it once it is placed under the lights.

Colombo gemology institute had confirmed that they had certified a Blue Star Sapphire gem stone weighing 1404.49 carats and said they have not certified anything larger, from the mines of Sri Lanka. The Sapphire under the light shows perfect rays like from a star. Star Sapphires are graded as superior quality for their star they produce under light. Recently this stone, weighing around 510 kg, had entered in to The Guinness Book of World Records after it was certified as the largest star sapphire cluster by the Gubelin Gem Lab in Switzerland.This star sapphire weighs around 510 kg or 2.5 million carats and has been named the “Serendipity Sapphire”.

The stone was mined in the popular mining town Ratnapura in Sri Lanka. It is valued at at least $100m and the current owner expects that it can fetch $175m at any auction. According to the owner it was very confidential as how much he had paid for the 1404.49 carats stone. The current owner had named it The Star of Adam as per the Muslim belief that Adam had arrived in Sri Lanka and lived on the slopes of a mountain which is now known as Adam’s Peak, after he was sent away from the Garden of Eden.

Blue Sapphire

Recently (2021) Sri Lanka had unveiled the world’s largest blue sapphire. It was unearthed in Ratnapura area. Its owner had named rhis as ‘Queen of Asia’. This Blue Sapphire weighs around 310 kilogram. Recently it was put on display for the first time at the residence of the owner. National Gem and Jewellery Authority had certified the gemstone to be a 1.550,000 carats one.

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman said that the gemstone will go through more tests as there could be more clean stones inside it. The chairman added that there are already one or two clean stones that could be seen from outside. However, international gem organizations are yet to certify the precious stone.

Gem experts say that the ‘Queen of Asia’ is made of titanium, iron, aluminum oxide and nickel. In addition in July 2021 the world’s largest star sapphire cluster named as ‘Serendipity Sapphire’ too was found here. This stone was found accidentally while digging a water well in the Ratnapura area. It is found to be weighing around 510 kg.
