Sri Lanka Cost of living.

In Sri Lanka meat products, Fish, Vegetables and Fruits are priced at high price and it can’t be afford by poor and Middle class people. In addition one loaf of  bread is being sold at Rs 150 up to Rs 180/- in different Bakery as there is no Government laid control price for it. More over, children are badly affected here in Sri Lanka who are in need of support from the International community.

During the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period egg and poultry products prices had gone up. There was a big shortage for vegetables, Banana Fruits and for the Bombay onion. And nearly all the small food shops and Bakery shops are closed. In addition who were staying for to attend work had problem in finding meals for them.

Sri Lanka rupees is becoming strong against US Dollar and Sri Lanka Bank’s had decreased the interest rates for Depositors and Lenders. In April 2024,  interest rates had gone down too and the fixed deposits in the banks will earn annually 8.2 % per annual.

Meanwhile in the month of April 2024, expressway toll posts had earned millions of Rupees. On the other hand Colombo ZOO and the Pinnawala elephant orphanage too had earned millions of rupees in this month of April.

Recently one Kilo of Carrot was sold at Rs 2,000/-. People are surviving with pumpkin,  plantain and Tapioca even though they too are sold at high price in the markets. In addition popular Salayo fish is being sold Rs 600 per kilo. Earlier it was sold for for Rs 200/-. However, egg is being sold at Rs 55/-  to Rs 65/- in the market. Currently in this year 2024, Sri Lanka citizens are expecting high living cost as nearly all the products and services had been added with 3% – 18% VAT.
